Features & Modules

Discover COI's 12 modes, the Adaptive Studio, Memory Lane, Vitals tracking, Music, Devotion, and all the comfort tools that make PCAI feel like home.

Talking to COI β€” Voice & Touch

COI is designed to be spoken to, just like talking to a friend. To start a conversation, simply tap COI on your home screen and begin speaking, or say "Hi COI" aloud if your device's microphone is active. The first time you use voice, your device will ask for microphone permission β€” tap "Allow" and COI will be able to hear you from then on. You do not need to press any buttons or use special commands; just speak naturally.

COI understands a wide range of requests and questions. You can ask COI to play a favorite song, check the weather, set a reminder, tell a story, guide you through a breathing exercise, or simply have a friendly conversation. If COI does not understand something, it will gently ask you to try again without any frustration or impatience. This is by design β€” COI is built to be patient, warm, and never dismissive.

On devices where voice input is not available or preferred, you can also interact with COI by tapping COI and typing your message in the text field that appears. COI responds with both text and voice, so even if you prefer typing, you can still hear COI's responses. The voice speed and volume can be adjusted in Settings under the Accessibility section, allowing you to tailor the experience to your hearing preferences. COI's voice is designed to be calm and soothing β€” never robotic or alarming β€” to create a sense of companionship and trust.

COI's 12 COI Modes

COI operates in different modes, each tailored to a specific type of interaction or emotional need. Think of these as different "moods" or "personalities" that COI can adopt. The 12 modes include: Companion (friendly, everyday conversation), Comfort (calming support during anxiety or distress), Memory (reminiscence prompts and life-story exercises), Devotion (spiritual readings, prayers, and meditative guidance), Music (curating and playing comfort music), Breathing (guided breathing and relaxation exercises), Journaling (reflective prompts and gratitude exercises), Wellness Check (gentle daily check-ins about mood, pain, and comfort), Story Time (reading aloud stories, poems, or scripture), Nature (ambient sounds and nature imagery descriptions), Celebration (acknowledging birthdays, anniversaries, and achievements), and Sleep (bedtime routines, lullabies, and wind-down guidance).

COI can automatically suggest the most appropriate mode based on context β€” for example, switching to Comfort mode if it detects signs of distress, or suggesting Sleep mode in the evening. You can also manually switch modes at any time by tapping the mode selector around COI or by saying something like "COI, let's do some breathing exercises." Each mode changes not only what COI says and does, but also the visual appearance of COI β€” its color, animation, and ambient glow adapt to match the mood of the interaction.

The 12 modes are available on the Comfort Canvas and Sanctuary plans. The free Gentle Harbor plan includes Companion and Wellness Check modes, giving you a meaningful introduction to COI's capabilities before upgrading. Regardless of your plan, COI's core personality remains consistent β€” always warm, always patient, and always respectful of your boundaries.

Adaptive Studio β€” 60 Modules

The Adaptive Studio is PCAI's library of interactive modules, each designed to support a specific aspect of well-being. With 60 modules available, the studio covers a wide range of needs: cognitive exercises for memory and focus, creative activities like art prompts and music composition, physical wellness guides for gentle movement and stretching, emotional check-ins and journaling, spiritual devotion and prayer, and practical daily living aids. The key word is "adaptive" β€” each module adjusts its difficulty, pacing, and presentation based on the user's abilities and preferences.

Modules are organized into categories for easy browsing. Identity & Clarity modules help maintain sense of self through life story work, personal history prompts, and photo-based reminiscence. Interface & Stability modules focus on cognitive engagement with puzzles, word games, and memory exercises designed in consultation with occupational therapists. Autonomy & Connection modules support communication, social interaction, and family bonding through shared activities and collaborative journals. Safety & Equity modules address practical needs like medication reminders, appointment tracking, and symptom logging.

Each module can be launched from the Adaptive Studio page or pinned to the dashboard for quick access. Caregivers and family members can recommend specific modules based on the person's interests or therapeutic goals. The platform tracks engagement and progress over time, providing insights to the care circle about which activities are most enjoyed and most beneficial. All modules are designed to be completed in short sessions β€” most take between two and fifteen minutes β€” so they can be easily integrated into daily routines without causing fatigue.

Memory Lane & Life Stories

Memory Lane is one of the most beloved features of COI Orb. It is a private, shared digital album where the care circle can upload photos, videos, voice messages, and written memories. For individuals living with dementia or cognitive decline, Memory Lane serves as a therapeutic tool β€” familiar faces, places, and sounds can spark recognition, reduce agitation, and create moments of joy and connection. For families, it is a way to share precious moments across distances and time zones.

Uploading content to Memory Lane is simple. From the Memory Lane page, tap the "Add" button and choose whether to upload a photo, record a video, leave a voice message, or write a text memory. You can add captions, dates, and tags to help organize the content. Family members can contribute from their own devices, and all new additions appear in a gentle notification for everyone in the care circle. Memory Lane also includes a "This Day in History" feature that surfaces memories from the same date in previous years, creating opportunities for reminiscence and storytelling.

Life Stories is a related but distinct feature. While Memory Lane is a collection of individual memories, Life Stories helps build a coherent narrative of a person's life β€” their childhood, career, family, achievements, and values. Life Stories can be created through guided interviews with COI (where COI asks gentle questions and records the responses) or through written entries by the person or their family. These stories become a lasting legacy that can be shared with future generations and used by healthcare providers to deliver more person-centered care.

Vitals & Health Tracking

The Vitals module allows you to manually record and track important health measurements such as blood pressure, blood sugar, weight, temperature, oxygen saturation, and pain levels. Open the Vitals page, tap "Add Reading," select the type of measurement, enter the value, and save. The system automatically records the date and time of each entry and displays trends over days, weeks, and months through simple, easy-to-read charts.

These readings are visible to the people in your care circle who have the appropriate permissions. For example, a caregiver might see blood pressure trends to share with the clinical team during a check-up, while a family member living abroad might simply see that vitals were recorded today and everything is within the expected range. This shared visibility helps the entire care circle stay informed without requiring constant phone calls or text messages.

It is important to note that PCAI does not connect directly to medical devices (such as blood pressure cuffs or glucose monitors) at this time. Readings are entered manually. This is a deliberate design choice to keep the platform simple and accessible β€” no Bluetooth pairing, no device setup, no technical troubleshooting. Just type the number and save. If your healthcare provider has recommended tracking specific measurements, you can set up gentle reminders through COI to help you remember to take and record readings at the right times.

Music Library, Devotion & Comfort Tools

Music is one of the most powerful forms of comfort, especially for individuals in palliative care. PCAI's Music Library allows you to upload favorite songs, hymns, and playlists, and access a curated collection of comfort music including gospel, classical, nature sounds, and lullabies. You can play music directly from the Library or ask COI to play a specific song, artist, or genre by voice. The library supports personal playlists β€” for example, creating a "Dad's Favorites" playlist with "Because He Lives," "For Thine Is the Kingdom," and Don Moen songs, as many families have done.

The Devotion module provides daily spiritual comfort through devotional readings, morning and evening prayers, scripture passages, and guided meditations. Content is available from multiple faith traditions, and you can upload your own devotional materials β€” a favorite prayer card, a recorded sermon, or a passage that has special meaning. The Devotion module can be set to deliver content at specific times, such as a morning prayer when the person wakes up or an evening reflection before sleep.

Beyond music and devotion, PCAI includes additional comfort tools such as guided breathing exercises (like box breathing and 4-7-8 breathing), progressive muscle relaxation scripts, nature soundscapes (rain, ocean waves, forest ambiance), and a gratitude journal that prompts for three things to be thankful for each day. All of these tools are accessible both through the Adaptive Studio and through COI's voice commands, making it easy to access comfort at any moment without navigating through menus.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use COI without internet?
Core comfort features like music playback, breathing exercises, journaling, and previously loaded Memory Lane content work offline on your device. However, COI's voice interactions require an internet connection because the AI processing happens in the cloud. Additionally, any shared updates to your care circle β€” such as new vitals readings or Memory Lane uploads from family members β€” will sync automatically when your internet connection returns. We recommend ensuring the device has a stable Wi-Fi connection for the best experience, especially if the person using PCAI relies heavily on COI for companionship.
How do I play my dad's favorite songs?
There are several ways to play specific songs. You can upload songs directly to the Music Library from your computer or phone, then ask COI "Play Dad's songs" or "Play the playlist called Dad's Favorites." Alternatively, you can open the Music Library from the dashboard, find the song or playlist, and tap play. Family members can also upload songs from their own accounts, making it easy to build a shared family music collection. Songs like "Because He Lives," "For Thine Is the Kingdom," and Don Moen's worship songs are popular choices that many families have already saved in their libraries.
What is the difference between Memory Lane and Life Stories?
Memory Lane is your family album β€” a collection of individual photos, videos, voice messages, and short memories. It is like a digital scrapbook where anyone in the care circle can contribute. Life Stories, on the other hand, is a structured narrative tool that helps build a coherent life story β€” the person's childhood, career, family history, values, and legacy. Think of Memory Lane as individual snapshots and Life Stories as the full biography. Both are valuable, and they complement each other beautifully.
Can caregivers see my vitals data?
Yes, but only if you have granted them permission. PCAI's permission system is granular β€” you can choose exactly what each person in your care circle can see. For example, you might allow a caregiver to see your blood pressure and blood sugar readings but not your journal entries. A family member might have permission to see Memory Lane but not vitals. These permissions are managed in the Privacy Center, which is accessible from Settings. You can change permissions at any time, and every change is logged so you can review who has access to what.
How many modules are in the Adaptive Studio?
The Adaptive Studio contains 60 modules across four categories: Identity & Clarity (life story work, personal history, photo reminiscence), Interface & Stability (puzzles, word games, memory exercises, cognitive engagement), Autonomy & Connection (communication tools, shared activities, collaborative journals), and Safety & Equity (medication reminders, appointment tracking, symptom logging, daily living aids). New modules are added regularly based on feedback from care circles, healthcare professionals, and research. Not all modules are available on every plan β€” the free Gentle Harbor plan includes a curated selection, while Comfort Canvas and Sanctuary plans unlock the full library.
