The 3-Gate Safety Architecture
COI Orb's safety system is built on three independent layers β or "gates" β that work together to ensure every interaction is safe, appropriate, and aligned with the user's well-being. This architecture was developed in consultation with palliative care specialists, ethicists, and cybersecurity experts, and it represents one of the most rigorous safety frameworks in any consumer wellness application.
The first gate is Content Safety. Before any AI response from COI reaches the user, it passes through a content filter that screens for harmful, distressing, or inappropriate content. This filter blocks responses that might cause panic, provide medical advice, suggest dangerous actions, or introduce topics that could be emotionally harmful. The content filter is particularly important in palliative care, where users may be in fragile emotional states and where an unfiltered AI response could cause significant distress. The filter is continuously updated based on feedback from care professionals and real-world usage patterns.
The second gate is Context Safety. COI doesn't just filter individual responses β it maintains awareness of the user's condition, current emotional state, and recent interaction history. If COI detects signs of acute distress (such as expressions of hopelessness, fear, or confusion), it can proactively shift to Comfort mode, offer calming exercises, or suggest reaching out to a care circle member. Context Safety also means that COI adapts its language and topics based on the user's cognitive abilities β using simpler words for someone with dementia, providing more detailed explanations for someone who wants deeper engagement.
The third gate is Human Oversight. Despite the sophistication of automated systems, PCAI recognizes that human judgment remains irreplaceable in safety-critical situations. The platform includes mechanisms for care circle members and clinical users to review COI interaction logs, flag concerning patterns, and intervene when necessary. If COI's wellness check reveals concerning responses (such as consistently high pain levels, expressions of loneliness, or declining engagement), the system can escalate alerts to designated care circle members. This human-in-the-loop approach ensures that technology augments β rather than replaces β human care and attention.
COI Is Not a Doctor β Understanding the Boundary
This is one of the most important things to understand about COI Orb: COI is a non-clinical wellness companion, not a medical device, not a doctor, and not a substitute for professional healthcare. COI will never diagnose a medical condition, prescribe medication, recommend treatments, interpret lab results, or provide medical advice. If you ask COI a medical question β βWhat does this pain mean?β or βShould I take this medication?β β COI will respond with something like: βI care about how youβre feeling, but Iβm not able to give medical advice. Please talk to your doctor or care team about this.β Would you like me to help you write down what you want to ask them?
This boundary is not a limitation β it is a design principle. COIβs role is to provide emotional comfort, reduce isolation, support daily wellness routines, and facilitate communication between the care circle. These are incredibly valuable functions, but they are fundamentally different from clinical care. By maintaining a clear boundary, PCAI ensures that users seek appropriate medical attention when they need it, rather than relying on an AI that cannot safely provide clinical guidance.
The platform does support clinical workflows in partnership with healthcare professionals. When a Clinic user (doctor, nurse, or care coordinator) is part of the care circle, they can review vitals trends, symptom logs, and wellness check responses to inform their clinical decisions. But the clinical user is always a human professional β PCAI provides them with better information, not clinical recommendations. The distinction is crucial and is one of the reasons healthcare providers trust PCAI as a complementary tool rather than a competing one.
Emergency Procedures
COI Orb includes a Safety Shield feature that can alert your care circle in urgent situations. The Safety Shield is accessible from the dashboard and, depending on your device settings, may be available through a physical button press or voice command. When activated, the Safety Shield sends an immediate notification to all designated emergency contacts in your care circle, along with your last known location (if location services are enabled) and a timestamp.
However, it is critical to understand that the Safety Shield is not a substitute for calling 911 or your local emergency number. In any life-threatening situation β chest pain, difficulty breathing, severe bleeding, loss of consciousness, falls with injury, or any situation where you believe someone's life is in danger β call emergency services first, then use the Safety Shield to notify your care circle. PCAI does not monitor for emergencies automatically, does not call 911 on your behalf, and cannot dispatch emergency responders.
The Safety Shield is best understood as a communication tool β it quickly lets your family and caregivers know that something is wrong, so they can respond even if they are far away. For example, if an elderly member experiences a fall and is able to press the Safety Shield, their daughter in another city receives an immediate alert and can coordinate with a nearby neighbor or call local emergency services on the member's behalf. The Safety Shield can also be configured to trigger based on inactivity β if the member has not interacted with the platform for an unusually long period (configurable by the care circle), a check-in alert is sent to designated contacts.
Pricing Plans & Billing
COI Orb offers three subscription tiers designed to be fair, transparent, and accessible. The most important thing to understand is that pricing is per household, not per person. One subscription covers the member and their entire care circle β there are no per-seat charges for family members or caregivers.
The Gentle Harbor plan is free and provides access to COI in Companion and Wellness Check modes, basic vitals tracking (blood pressure and blood sugar), a limited Circle of Care (up to 3 people), and access to a curated selection of Adaptive Studio modules. This plan is designed to give you a meaningful experience of the platform and is ideal for getting started or for those who need only basic features.
The Comfort Canvas plan is our most popular option for families. At $19.99 per month per household, it unlocks all 12 COI modes, the full Adaptive Studio with 60 modules, unlimited Memory Lane storage, video calling, and a Circle of Care of up to 15 people. This plan is designed for families who are actively using PCAI as part of their daily care routine and need the complete suite of features.
The Sanctuary plan at $39.99 per month is designed for larger households and professional care teams. It includes everything in Comfort Canvas plus unlimited care circle members, priority support, advanced analytics and reporting for clinical users, and custom module configurations. This plan is ideal for care homes, home care agencies, and families with complex care needs involving multiple healthcare professionals.
All paid plans include a 14-day free trial so you can experience the full platform before committing. You can upgrade, downgrade, or cancel your plan at any time from the Account Settings page. There are no long-term contracts, no cancellation fees, and no hidden charges. If you cancel a paid plan, your account reverts to the free Gentle Harbor plan β your data is preserved, but access to premium features is restricted until you resubscribe.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
While PCAI is designed to be as reliable and straightforward as possible, occasional issues can arise. Here are solutions to the most common problems users encounter.
COI is not responding to voice commands. First, check that your device's microphone is not muted and that you have granted microphone permission to the browser. On most devices, you can check this in the browser's address bar β look for a microphone icon and make sure it is set to "Allow." If the issue persists, try refreshing the page and tapping COI once before speaking. Background noise can also interfere with voice recognition, so try moving to a quieter room. On desktop computers, ensure your microphone is properly connected and selected as the default input device in your system settings.
The page is loading slowly or not updating. PCAI requires an internet connection for most features. Check that your Wi-Fi or mobile data is working by loading another website. If your connection is slow, the platform may take longer to load β try closing other tabs or applications that might be using bandwidth. If the issue persists, try clearing your browser's cache and cookies, or try a different browser.
I cannot see my family member's updates. Check your permissions in the Privacy Center (Settings > Privacy). The information you are looking for may be in a category that your role does not have access to. Contact the Admin or Member of your care circle to request access. Also check that you are viewing the correct care circle β if you are part of multiple circles, use the dropdown in the navigation to switch.
I forgot my password. On the sign-in page, tap "Forgot password?" Enter your email address and you will receive a password reset link. The link expires after 1 hour for security. If you do not receive the email, check your spam folder. If the problem continues, contact our support team.
The text is too small. Use the Text Size controls at the top of the Help Center pages, or go to Settings > Accessibility and adjust the text size and contrast settings there. You can also use your browser's built-in zoom (Ctrl + on Windows, Cmd + on Mac) or your device's accessibility settings to enlarge text across all apps.
